Exploring The All-New MX-F PLC

What Is the MX-F PLC?

MX-F is part of the Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC MX Controller platform that integrates sequence, motion and network control into one controller. The MX-F series is a compact, all-in-one device control solution that can be extended with MELSEC iQ-F Series modules to provide a flexible platform that grows with your application.

One Controller, Three Functions

The MX-F is built around a high-performance multi-core MPU (Micro Processor Unit) as standard. The multi-core architecture significantly increases processing performance, including high-accuracy calculations like double-precision floating point operations, and up to 10X the motion control performance of previous Mitsubishi Electric models. Integration of sequence control, motion control and network control on the MELSEC MX Controller platform enables faster and more accurate control.

This means in practice that programs for sequence and motion control are merged into one. This makes your programs simple because you don’t have to write separate programs for each module or pass data between modules. That consolidation positively impacts development time and ongoing maintenance for engineers who have had to manage separate PLC and motion controller programs and deal with the overhead of keeping them synchronized.

1: Sequence Control

Sequence and motion control on the same controller means that ladder logic and motion programs share the same data environment. There is no inter-controller communication, no lag in synchronization, and no translation layer between the two. What happens on the sequence side is instantly visible to the motion side, and vice-versa.

2: Motion Control

In the past, single-core controllers may have had a hard time dealing with multiple axes at once, but the MX-F’s multi-core MPU distributes that workload across multiple cores. The result is stable, high-speed control even with increasing axes without the processing burden building up in one place.

To better handle this load, the MX-F supports mixing low-speed, medium-speed, and high-speed operation cycles across axes. Instead of running everything at the same cycle rate, you can adjust the control speed to the needs of each part of the machine. This spreads the load on the core and keeps the whole system running efficiently. The MX-F supports up to 16 controllable axes, giving you the headroom to control individual mechanisms and the entire production line from one controller. For smaller systems, built-in I/O covers 4-axis pulse positioning and 8-channel high-speed counters, keeping equipment costs down at the lower end.

3: Network Control

The MX-F has a built-in Ethernet port compatible with CC-Link IE TSN. This enables a single Ethernet cable to connect up to 30 standard stations and 16 motion stations, reducing wiring and labor while allowing one unit to control both main and peripheral devices. CC-Link IE TSN is an open Ethernet network that allows IT and OT communications on a common infrastructure. As facilities transition to more connected, data-visible production environments, having that capability embedded in the controller, rather than needing a separate network gateway, simplifies the overall architecture.

Best Implementation?

The MX-F is well-suited for small to medium-sized machines that need tight coordination between sequence and motion, packaging equipment, assembly systems, and multi-axis handling applications where a single integrated controller simplifies both the hardware architecture and the programming environment.
